Artist Bio
Debbie Lee’s mixed media textile and stitch work is a celebration of the beauty and joy of each place it depicts. In viewing, there is something new to be found and enjoyed each time.
‘Beautiful and inspiring work, a deep sense of place and joy in the landscape’ *
Her work is developed using layering of various techniques.
Drawing is important, it is the primary step to each piece. She draws simply in black biro, within sketch books, trying to capture the movement, and feelings of the place.
Her final pieces start with paint, this reflects the sketch and is used to define colour value to inform the following layers. These layers are collage - both fabric and paper, then finally machine and hand embroidery. The resulting work is both considered and intuitive with several dimensions to it, image, composition, colour, line and texture.
‘Fabulous work. So skilled and detailed’ *
Since 2006, Debbie has been making Mixed Media Textile Art for the wall.
Her work generally, but not always, is inspired by and depicts the scenery of Scotland, often the Highlands where she lives and grew up. More recently Debbie’s work has been inspired by time spent walking, with family, friends and her dogs. Inspiration comes much more naturally from places spent with people; connections and inspiration from the landscape are amplified by connecting with those who are with her.
‘So painstaking, so beautiful, so evocative’ *
Debbie grew up in Fort William and studied Embroidered and Woven Textiles at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1992. After graduating she worked firstly as a woven textile designer, then an outdoor clothing designer. She has lived in the Caithness, in the far north of Scotland for the past 20 years, with her husband, three daughters and a lot of animals.
Debbie has had several successful solo exhibitions and her work can be seen in a selection of selling galleries throughout Scotland.
